Lyndee read an article in The Friend Magazine about Martin's Cove and has been begging me to take her there ever since. She is such my pioneer girl! We spent 5 hours visiting Martin's Cove (which is only 1 hour off of I-80 in Wyoming). Martin's Cove is a place where Mormon Pioneer's stayed on their trek west during the snow storms. Lyndee could tell you a lot more.....there are also other groups that passed on this route going to California and Oregon.
This is a picture of us in the visitor's center. This sculpture of the handcart company was sculpted by my great grandfather, Torleif Knaphus. The life size one is on Temple Square in Salt Lake City.
This is Lyndee's dream!!! She has wanted to pull a handcart for a very long time! She loves this pioneer dress that she got to wear for Halloween last year....and she wears it quite frequently at home. The apron is from Grandma Wirthlin. The trail to the actual Martin's Cove is 5 miles. The missionaries at the visitor's center take people up as close as 3/4 of a mile (on one side) in on carts and then you have to walk the rest of the way since the trail gets slim. We walked into the cove, the we walked out the other side of the trail which you have to walk a mile. Lyndee pushed the stroller on the dirt this time and I carried Katelyn since she fell and got scraped up. When we got down to the part where we could be picked up, we were told that it could be 45 minutes to an hour to wait for a cart to be picked up since there were so many youth on the trail that carts could not get through. I decided to walk the rest of the 1 1/2 miles to the visitor's center. One sister missionary suggested that we take this handcart and she offered to push it down for us, but this is Lyndee's dream. She pulled it most of the way!!! She went pretty fast too! It was so much fun! I am so glad that we got to walk the whole way back! Everyone got a kick out of how ambitious Lyndee was! The girls got to sing as they walked, and walked, and walked....how fun! They kept singing Happy Birthday to me as well.

Katelyn had to have her chance to pull a handcart for a few seconds. It wasn't as easy as she thought!

This is the famous Oscar the Dog that was talked about in the article Lyndee read. Oscar goes along with people on the trek and sleeps in the campground that people are in. Just recently he has been protecting people from the coyotes that are around. We had to go driving around to find Oscar at the end of the day. He usually picks one group to stay with for the day.

We went to Martin's Cove three years ago when my grandparents were serving their mission there. It's a very cool place indeed! I'm glad Lyndee liked it so much.
My grandpa makes miniature (pretty much doll-sized) handcarts by hand. If you'd like, I could ask him if he has any extras or if he would be willing to make one for Lyndee. Just email me.
I had a great-great-great grandma who was with the Martin company and lost her legs to the knees to frostbite. She walked the rest of her life on her stumps. I will see if I can dig out the story-- Lyndee might like it.
